Phở Bát Đàn
Established at the heart of the Old Quarter since the 1960s, Pho Bat Dan still manages to retain the original taste since its opening. Not only well known for its delicious pho but also for its long queue which has been occurring for decades. People are queuing for a reason. The broth here is clear yet flavourful with reduced goodness of bone marrow being carefully stewed for hours.Be patient and you would be rewarded with one of the most authentic bowl of beef pho in Hanoi. Since the restaurant is self-serving, you have to wait in line then find a table for yourself to enjoy that mouth-watering noodle soup. After years of being shut down, Pho Thang Loi ( Victory Pho) which was one of the top 3 best pho in Hanoi back in the old days was reopened under a new name – Phở Sướng. Sướng in Vietnamese means “satisfying”, according to the owner, the restaurant was named to trigger people’s curiosity. It also refers to the satisfying feeling that they want their customers to feel after eating their noodle. Pho Suong is a breakfast staple and known for its unmistakably Northern flavour – clear broth, clean taste and tender beef.

Phở Lý Quốc Sư
Even though there are now 3 branches in Hanoi, the original restaurant at number 10 Ly Quoc Su street is still preferred by local eaters. If you have only one chance to try Pho in Hanoi, this is the one. The broth, the noodle and the beef are cooked to perfection. Getting those crispy fried cruller to dip in the hot broth is always delicious. Here, you can also choose the types of beef and how well you want your meat to be cooked to suit your preferences. This restaurant has air conditioning with comfortable set up to make up for the lack of space.

Being famous for their stir fried medium rare steak noodle, Pho Thin is always referred to as one of the best Pho in Hanoi. Slices of beef is quickly stir fried with ginger, onion and garlic before being added to a bowl of noodles. The broth is therefore a bit fattier than that of other restaurants but it doesn’t make you feel sick and definitely has more flavours. Want to eat Pho like a Hanoian, just order some crispy cruller to dip in that mouth watering hot broth.

For those who are vegetarians, this is the one for you. Not many places offer vegetarian Pho that also won the runner up prize in a Pho cooking contest held by Hanoi city. Elastic noodle strings, tender beef slices and freshly cut onion altogether create a simple yet beautiful flavour. The sweetness of the beef and the smell of the freshly made chilli sauce has helped to make an excellent bowl of pho that deserves the name Pho Nho meaning “A bowl of pho to forever remember…”Besides beef noodle, the restaurant also sells chicken noodle, however, the beef noodle is more highly regarded.

Phở 65 Lãn Ông
While beef Pho is the traditional and authentic dish, overtime people have created a modern adapted version with chicken. You can have the traditional hot noodle soup type or dry Pho with the special mixing sauce which this place is most famous for. The little shop only opens for dinner as they set up tables and chairs on the pedestrian path. Dry Pho is a perfect substitution for a hot bowl of Pho on a hot summer night.
